 The Paradox Island: The Island of Those Who Want Change but Reject Those Who Try to Make It

Every day, they claim to want change. They say they are dissatisfied with the system they live in and that they are not getting what they deserve. In the north of the island, they demand improvements to the increasingly difficult living conditions. They say they want peace; they are looking for reunification, comfort, and tranquility. Or do they simply want to have the stores they shop at during Black Friday in their own place, without having to wait three hours at checkpoints? While this might seem like a reasonable request, isn’t the primary goal to find a solution to the half-century-long difficulties and human rights violations faced by all Cypriots, and to live together in one country again? Is it really just about shopping? Is it about expanding their individual freedoms? Is that why I become "bad" when I try to "get closer to Greek Cypriots and the Republic of Cyprus"? How will we create a common future and a shared homeland for all of us, and find solutions to our problems, without "getting closer"? How will we expand our individual freedoms without achieving social welfare?

I still can't understand it. Some of you will ask me, "Haven’t you gotten used to it yet?" I put all my time and energy into this, and despite all external attacks, I try to continue the struggle. Then, I get attacked by the very people whose rights I am fighting for. It is quite demotivating, isn’t it? If the criticisms were constructive, I would understand and try to improve myself in that direction. But the last incident and the subsequent slander… do you know what it was?

"This girl is of no use to anyone. She only supports the Republic of Cyprus. At this rate, she will get citizenship; but she won’t give it to us. Besides, her position is very different. She is studying law at the University of Nicosia in the Republic of Cyprus, has written for Fileleftheros, the biggest newspaper in the Republic, and it seems she has a bright future ahead of her, either there or in Europe. She might even be an agent of the Republic of Cyprus. Personally, I don't know her, of course."

This is how easy it is to slander a person in the north of the island. Don’t they ever stop to think—if I were thinking in an individualistic and selfish way, would I have been the founder of the first organization that started the social struggle for the issue of mixed marriages? I am thinking of societal struggle, but are they? I’m not so sure… Because their behavior suggests otherwise. Furthermore, I am constantly explaining that the most detailed way to resolve this issue is through collaboration and diplomacy with the Republic of Cyprus, that we need to understand each other's perspectives through rapprochement, and that we need to find a common solution that satisfies all of us. From what I see, this approach is being recognized as effective. So why am I met with such resistance? I am trying to be the voice of the struggle with this approach, yet the attacks continue. I am trying to develop myself with my own resources to solve this issue, but still, I am the bad one. They want change, they see how change can happen, but they oppose those who are trying to bring about that change. Therefore, they are also opposing change. It feels like I am stuck in a huge paradox island. I don’t really understand what they expect from me, or the reason for their behavior.

As a university student, I am fighting as much as I can, given my circumstances. Despite everything I have been through. I, for one, don’t expect anything from them, but showing respect shouldn’t be this hard, should it? Besides, this struggle is already a very vocal one; everyone can fight in their own way, with their own approach. So why must we always act aggressively instead of showing respect and being constructive in our struggles? Don’t they realize that we won’t get anywhere with attacks?

When I started this struggle, an elder comrade of mine told me this and it keeps echoing in my ears: "You can’t save a society that doesn’t want to save itself, no matter what you do."

Paradoks Ada: Değişim İsteyen Ama Değişim Yapmaya Çalışanları İstemeyenler Adası

Değişim istediklerini söylüyorlar her gün. Yaşadıkları düzenden memnun olmadıklarını, hak ettiklerini alamadıklarını söylüyorlar. Adanın kuzeyinde her gün daha da zorlaşan yaşam koşullarının iyileştirilmesini istiyorlar. Barış istediklerini söylüyorlar; yeniden birleşme, huzur ve rahatlık aradıklarını söylüyorlar. Yoksa sadece Black Friday’de geçiş noktalarında üç saat beklemek yerine alışveriş yaptıkları markaların kendi yaşadıkları yerde de olmasını ve sınır kapısında beklememeyi mi istiyorlar? Makul bir istek olabilecek bir durum olsa da, asıl temel amaç, yarım asırdır tüm Kıbrıslıların yaşadığı zorluklara ve insan hakları ihlallerine bir çare bulmak, yeniden tek bir ülkede, hep birlikte yaşamak değil mi? Sadece  ‘alışveriş’ mi? Ya da bunun gibi sadece bireysel özgürlüklerinin genişletilmesi mi? Bu yüzden mi ben ‘Kıbrıslırumlarla ve Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti ile yakınlaşma’ çabası gösterdiğimde ‘kötü’ oluyorum acaba? Hepimize ortak bir gelecek ve ortak bir yurt yaratmak ve hepimizin sorunlarına çözüm bulmak, ‘yakınlaşmadan’ nasıl olacak? Toplumsal refahı elde etmeden bireysel özgürlüklerimizi nasıl genişleteceğiz?

                Hala anlamlandıramıyorum. Bazılarınız bana, “hala alışmadın mı,” diye soracaksınız. Tüm vaktimi ve enerjimi ortaya koyuyor; dıştan gelen tüm saldırılara rağmen mücadeleye devam etmeye çalışıyorum. Sonra da hakları için mücadele ettiğim kişiler tarafından saldırılara maruz kalıyorum. Oldukça motivasyon kırıcı, değil mi? Yapıcı eleştiri şeklinde olsalar tamam diyeceğim yine, kendimi o doğrultuda geliştirmeye çalışacağım. Ama son tanık olduğum durum ve arkasından gelen iftira neydi biliyor musunuz?

                “Bu kızın kimseye yararı yok. Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti’ni destekleyen tavırlar sergiliyor sadece. Bu gidişle kendisi vatandaşlık alacak; bizlere almayacak. Zaten konumu da çok farklı, Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti’ndeki Lefkoşa Üniversitesi’nde hukuk eğitimi alıyor, Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti’nin en büyük gazetesi Fileleftheros’ta köşe yazısı yazmış ve belli ki orada ya da Avrupa’da parlak bir gelecek hedefliyor. Bu kız Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti’nin anlaşmalı ajanı bile olabilir. Şahsen tanımıyorum tabi ki.”

                Adanın kuzeyinde tanımadığın bir insana iftira atmak bu kadar kolay olmuş işte. Hiç akıllarına gelmiyor mu acaba, eğer bireysel ve bencilce düşünsem, karma evlilik sorunu hakkındaki toplumsal mücadeleyi başlatan ilk örgütün kurucusu olmazdım diye. Ben toplumsal mücadeleyi düşünüyorum ancak onlar da bu şekilde düşünüyor mu? Pek emin değilim... Bu davranışları aksini söylüyor çünkü. Ayrıca en detaylı şekilde bu sorunun Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti ile uzlaşı ve diplomasi noktasında çözülebileceğini anlatıyorum hep, yakınlaşarak birbirimizin bakış açısını anlamamız gerektiğini ve hepimizi tatmin edecek ortak bir çözüm bulmamız gerektiğini anlatıyorum. Gördüğüm kadarıyla da bu yaklaşımın işe yarayabileceğinin farkına varılıyor işte. Peki neden o zaman bu şekilde bir dirençle karşılaşıyorum? Ben bu yaklaşımla mücadelenin sesi olmaya çalışıyorum, yine de saldırıları peşimi bırakmıyor. Bu sorunu çözebilmek için kendi imkanlarımla kendimi geliştirmeye çalışıyorum, yine kötü olan ben oluyorum. Değişim istiyorlar, değişimin de nasıl olabileceğini görüyorlar, ancak değişim yapmaya çalışan kişilere karşı çıkıyorlar, dolayısıyla değişime de karşı çıkıyorlar. Sanki kocaman bir paradoks adasının içerisindeyim. Bilmiyorum, gerçekten benden ne beklediklerini, davranışlarının nedenini anlayamıyorum. Bir üniversite öğrencisi olarak imkanımın olduğu kadar mücadele veriyorum işte. Üstelik tüm yaşadıklarıma rağmen. Ben onlardan hiçbir şey beklemiyorum mesela, ama saygı göstermek de bu kadar zor olmamalı... Ayrıca zaten bu mücadele halihazırda çok sesli bir mücadele, herkes kendi yaklaşımıyla da mücadele edebilir sonuçta. Neden farklı kulvarlarda saygı göstererek mücadele etmek ve yapıcı olmak varken her zaman saldırgan davranışlar sergilemek zorundayız? Hala saldırılarla bir yere varamayacağımızın farkında değil miyiz?

                Bu mücadeleye başladığımda bir büyüğümün bana söylediği söz yankılanıyor şimdi ise kulaklarımda: “Kendini kurtarmak istemeyen bir toplumu, ne yaparsan yap kurtaramazsın.”
