The Problem That Separates Thousands of Young People from the World: The Problem of Mixed Marriage (Tr: Binlerce Genci Dünyadan Koparan Sorun: Karma Evlilik Sorunu)

Cyprus is a unique island with its air and water, nature and history. However, the problems experienced within it are equally 'unique'. One of these is the problem of mixed marriage. This problem, which only belongs to a special geography like Cyprus in the world, has turned thousands of young people into a 'problem that disconnects them from the world'.

The problem of mixed marriage occurs when the spouse of a citizen of Turkey or a third world country who marries a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus in the TRNC and the child born from this marriage in the TRNC are not accepted into the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus. It is clear that this problem cannot be solved by individual means. As a society, we must embrace this problem, internalize it and fight against it. This problem has a political, legal and sociological aspect, and it is also a problem in which propaganda and lobbying activities are of great importance.

Movement of Resolution for Mixed Marriage Problem is an organization struggling to overcome this problem. The aim is for politicians to mention this problem in their manifestos and negotiations. In addition, he plans to work with human rights lawyers and take the case to the ECHR. The problem of mixed marriage was a problem that was not even heard of in the recent past and failed to occupy the social agenda. However, due to political developments and conflicts, this problem has become one of the issues that attracts the most attention of diplomats, politicians and journalists.

“A large percentage of the Turkish Cypriot community is affected by the problem of mixed marriages.”

The political dimension of the issue can only be solved when this problem is embraced and expressed by everyone. Due to the political developments and conflicts that took place many years ago, today a newborn baby from a mixed marriage still suffers from this problem and has difficulty in accessing basic human rights. The Mixed Marriage Problem Solution Movement is a search for rights, trying to overcome a problem that has not even been discussed for years as a unity. It is the spirit of solidarity and struggle. In short, this organization is a hope.

Remember, our struggle will be stronger with you. Despite those who see this problem as an 'unsolvable problem' and those who do not want to solve it, let's show the world what we can do when we come together. Solidarity is our strength; Let organized struggle be our voice. Let the problem of mixed marriage be a part of our history book, not a part of our lives anymore.

Kıbrıs, havası ve suyuyla, doğasıyla, tarihiyle eşi benzeri olmayan bir adadır. Ancak içerisinde yaşanan sorunlar da ayni şekilde ‘eşsiz’dir. Bunlardan biri de karma evlilik sorunudur. Dünyada sadece Kıbrıs gibi özel bir coğrafyaya ait olan bu sorun, binlerce genci ‘dünyadan koparan bir sorun’ haline getirmiştir. 

Karma evlilik sorunu, Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti vatandaşı ile KKTC’de evlenen Türkiye ya da üçüncü dünya ülkesi vatandaşı eşin ve bu evlilikten KKTC’de doğmuş olan çocuğun Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti vatandaşlığına kabul edilmemesi ile oluşmaktadır. Bu sorunun bireysel yollarla çözülmeyeceği açıktır. Toplum olarak bu sorunu benimsemeli, içselleştirmeli ve mücadele etmeliyiz. Bu sorun siyasi, hukuksal ve sosyolojik bir bacağı olduğu gibi, propaganda ve lobicilik faaliyetlerinin de çok önem arz ettiği bir sorundur.

Karma Evlilik Sorunu Çözüm Hareketi, bu sorunun üstesinden gelmek için mücadele veren bir örgüttür. Siyasilerin manifestolarında ve müzakerelerde bu sorundan bahsetmeleri amaçlanmaktadır. Bunun yanında insan hakları avukatları ile birlikte çalışıp, davayı AİHM’e taşımayı da planlamaktadır. Karma evlilik sorunu, yakın geçmişte adı bile duyulmayan, toplumsal gündemi meşgul etmeyi beceremeyen bir sorundu. Ancak artık siyasi gelişmeler ve çekişmeler yüzünden, bu sorun, diplomatların, siyasilerin ve gazetecilerin en çok dikkatini çeken konulardan biri haline gelmiştir.

“Kıbrıs Türk toplumunun büyük bir yüzdesi, karma evlilik sorunundan etkilenmektedir.”

İşin siyasi boyutu, bu sorun herkes tarafından benimsenip dile getirildiğinde ancak çözülebilir. Yıllar önce olan siyasi gelişmeler ve çekişmeler yüzünden, bugün hala karma evlilikten yeni doğan bir bebek, bu sorundan muzdarip ve temel insan haklarına erişmekte güçlük çekiyor. Karma Evlilik Sorunu Çözüm Hareketi, hak arayışıdır, birlik olarak yıllardır konusu bile edilmemiş sorunun üstesinden gelmeye çalışmaktır. Dayanışma ruhudur, mücadeledir. Yani kısacası bu örgüt, bir umuttur.

Unutmayın, mücadelemiz siz varken daha güçlü olacaktır. Bu sorunu ‘çözülmesi mümkün olmayan bir sorun’ görenlere, çözmek istemeyenlere inat, gelin, birlik olduğumuzda neler yapabileceğimizi tüm dünyaya gösterelim. Dayanışma, gücümüz; örgütlü mücadele sesimiz olsun. Karma evlilik sorunu artık hayatımızın değil, tarih kitabımızın bir parçası olsun.

We Are Moving Away from Solving the Mixed Marriage Problem! (Tr: Karma Evlilik Sorununa Çözüm Bulmaktan Uzaklaşıyoruz!)

 With the movement we started approximately 2.5 years ago, the mixed marriage problem has occupied the agenda both in the north and south of Cyprus. Earlier this year, although it did not satisfy most Turkish Cypriots, the 14-point package announced by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Hristodoulides, for Turkish Cypriots included the mixed marriage problem as well. From my perspective, this was a significant move because it showed that the government of the Republic of Cyprus was not indifferent to this issue and was open to working with us. But unfortunately, we could not and still cannot make good use of this "invitation." Some politicians in the north of our island have little knowledge about this issue, and sometimes, for their political interests, they use incorrect arguments , making us appear quite unsympathetic in the eyes of the public in the Republic of Cyprus.
