Can Federal Cyprus, Be An 'Intermediate Formula' To Unitary Cyprus? (Tr: Federal Kıbrıs, Üniter Kıbrıs’a Giden Bir ‘Ara Formül’ Olabilir mi?)

Because I attend the University of Nicosia, I had the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds. I met people who identify themselves as "Greeks of Cyprus" and others who identify as "Cypriots." Among them, there is a political science professor who identifies himself as a "patriot" and "Cypriot." Recently, I came across an article he wrote in a newspaper, titled "The Federalization of the Republic of Cyprus." I was surprised because, in my mind, "patriotism and statism" had always been associated with a "unitary Cyprus." I reached out to him to ask the questions on my mind. The response I received led me to look at the Cyprus issue from a more realistic perspective. An ideal Cyprus where the unitary and Cypriot identity is paramount can indeed be an ideal Cyprus. But in reality, we must realize that we are currently far from this ideal. Compared to the past, the pressure from Turkey in the northern part...

How All Cypriots Can Run as Candidates from the Same List in European Parliament Elections? The Significance of the Aziz v Cyprus Case (Tr: Avrupa Parlamentosu Seçimlerinde Tüm Kıbrıslılar Nasıl Ayni Listeden Aday Olabiliyorlar? Aziz v Kıbrıs Davası’nın Önemi)

Due to the absence of the Turkish Cypriot community in the Republic of Cyprus, the presidency, various ministries, some seats in the parliament, and significant areas in the judiciary were left vacant. In 1964, after the Turkish Cypriots separated from the Republic of Cyprus, the "Doctrine of Necessity" was enacted under emergency law to fill the void in the constitution and ensure the continuity of the state, as a result of Mustafa Ibrahim's case. Consequently, the Constitutional Court and the High Court were merged under a single umbrella. In short, because the Doctrine of Necessity is still in effect, there is no separate Constitutional Court for the Republic of Cyprus. This is where the Doctrine of Necessity comes into play. Contrary to popular belief, the Doctrine of Necessity even allows for the "stretching" of the 1960 Constitution in modern times. In less than a month, regardless of where they live, all citizens of the Republic of Cyprus will vote togeth...

‘Homeland'? Sold It, Gone! (Tr: 'Memleket’ mi? Sattık, Gitti!)

The structure known as the "TRNC" continues to be a place where international law is disregarded, and only jungle laws prevail. It's becoming a backyard where major powers dump all their dirt, and day by day, it's being dragged into an even worse state before our very eyes. And yet, we still continue to whisper "homeland" with feeble voices. Yes, "homeland"... But soon, it will be a homeland that doesn't belong to Cypriots anymore! Cyprus is being sold off right before our eyes, and we're just watching the sale of our "homeland" without doing anything. Remember, sometimes remaining silent in the face of a crime is to become complicit in that crime. "If it's not officially annexed, let's buy it with money instead." Half a century ago, the properties of Greek Cypriots seized in the north of the island through Turkey's intervention were initially given to Turkish Cypriots who migrated from the south as "e...
